Most visitors come to Veľký Meder in summer. Outdoor pools, water slides, a full car park. Those who know the off season, though, come back precisely then, and they have good reasons.

This article sets out what is open at Thermal Corvinus from October to April, and why a winter stay on Rye Island (Žitný ostrov) is underrated.

What is open all year

The baths have thirteen pools: seven indoor pools running all year and six outdoor pools, open from roughly May to early October. The total water surface is around 5,400 m² and the water temperature ranges, depending on the pool, from about 25 to 38 °C.

Outside the summer season, then, you have:

  • seven indoor pools, including the warmer ones,
  • a sauna and vitality world with a salt chamber,
  • massages and other treatments.

These details reflect the operator’s information as of September 2026. Opening hours, admission prices and the range of facilities do change, so always check them before you travel on the official website of the baths.

Why the off season is better

Fewer people. This is the main reason. In July you queue for the slide and look for a free sun lounger. In November you have the pool almost to yourself.

The sauna makes sense. At thirty degrees outside, the sauna world is something you tick off. When it is five degrees and foggy, it is exactly what you came for.

Accommodation is easier to find. Outside the main season more rooms are free and you can choose your dates calmly, with no need to book six months ahead.

A quieter town. Veľký Meder lives on tourism in summer. In autumn and winter it is an ordinary little town on Rye Island, which has a charm of its own.

What to do when you do not want to spend all day in the water

This question comes up sooner on a winter break than in summer. A day by the pool is fine; two days, less so.

At the manor we have a 35,000 m² park that looks nothing like the summer photographs: bare trees, mist over the lake, silence. Walking through it is a different experience altogether. Indoors there is a gallery of contemporary paintings, board games and table tennis.

Nearby there are places that are more accessible off season: the dyke along the Danube for a walk, the viewing platforms at the Gabčíkovo waterworks, the water mill in Kolárovo.

One thing worth knowing in advance: access to the Číčov oxbow lake is restricted from 1 March to 15 July because of the nesting season. In autumn and winter, by contrast, it is a good spot for birdwatching.

You will find more ideas in our article What to do in Veľký Meder.

When exactly to come

  • October. The outdoor pools close, but it is still warm enough for walks. A good compromise.
  • November. The quietest month of the year. If you are looking for silence, this is it.
  • December and the holidays. The season for wellness breaks, with Christmas markets in the area. Dates around Christmas and New Year fill up early.
  • January and February. Frost and sauna. The best combination of the year.
  • March. The first warm days, still without the crowds. The cycling season begins.

How to enjoy the sauna if you are not a regular

The sauna world is the main reason to come off season. A few practical things worth knowing:

Give yourself time. One round is short: warm up, cool down, rest. Allow two hours for three rounds.

Drink. Before you start and between rounds. Most of the unpleasantness comes from not doing it.

Respect the house rules. Every sauna world has its own rules on the age of children, what to wear and the ceremonies. Read them on the way in; they differ from place to place.

Do not overdo the food beforehand. A heavy lunch and a sauna do not go together.

What to do when it is freezing outside

A winter stay on Rye Island is not only about the water:

  • a walk along the dyke, where in the frost the air is clear and you can see a long way,
  • birdwatching at the Číčov oxbow lake, which is accessible at this time of year,
  • the park at the manor, with mist over the lake,
  • the milling museum in Kolárovo, under a roof.

What to pack for a winter stay

A winter break at the baths asks for slightly different things than a summer one:

  • A bathrobe and flip-flops. More useful on the way back from the pool than in summer.
  • A hat and scarf for the journey back. Wet hair and frost are a poor combination.
  • Face cream. Chlorinated water, the sauna and the cold together dry the skin out.
  • Two swimming costumes, so you never have to put on a damp one.
  • Warm shoes with a non-slip sole if you are planning walks along the dyke.
  • A book or a game. Winter evenings are longer and the programme shorter.

Where to stay in winter

In winter, different things matter. The distance to the baths counts for less when you are driven there. We take our guests to the thermal baths by free shuttle, so there is no walking in the cold and no hunting for a parking space.

What does start to matter is where you come back to. A baroque manor house with a park, a hot meal and somewhere to sit in the evening are worth more in winter than a flat twenty metres closer to the pool.

We have 13 rooms and apartments in seven categories, home cooking from Rye Island served as half board with dietary options, and free parking in an enclosed, monitored courtyard.

Have a look at our accommodation or our stay packages, offered exclusively for direct bookings. If you would like to give a stay as a present, we also have gift vouchers.

Frequently asked questions

Is Thermal Corvinus open in winter?

Yes. The indoor section with seven pools operates all year round. The outdoor pools are usually open from roughly May to early October.

How many pools are open outside the summer season?

Seven indoor pools. In summer another six outdoor pools are added, thirteen in total.

Is it worth visiting the thermal baths in November or March?

In our view, yes. There are fewer people, accommodation is easier to find, and cold weather suits the sauna world far better than the heat does.
