An autumn weekend in Veľký Meder is different from a summer one. No queues at the entrance to the baths, free benches, mist over the Danube and an evening when you are glad to come back to a warm dinner. If you have only ever visited in summer, autumn will surprise you.

We have put together a two-night itinerary that we also recommend to our guests. It is not a plan you have to complete. It is an outline from which you can pick whatever you feel like doing.

Why autumn

Thermal baths without the crowds. Thermal Corvinus has seven indoor pools open all year round. The outdoor pools close at around the beginning of October, and most of the visitors leave with them.

Nature at its best. The floodplain forests along the Danube are full of colour in autumn, and the Číčov oxbow lake of the Danube, where access is restricted in spring because of nesting birds, is a good place to go right now.

Peace and quiet. Out of season, Veľký Meder is an ordinary small town on Rye Island (Žitný ostrov). Boring for some, exactly what others are looking for.

Day one: arrival and a walk in the park

Rooms are ready from 14:00. If you are coming by train, tell us your arrival time and we will collect you from the station free of charge. If you come by car, you can park in our enclosed courtyard, also free of charge.

Leave the first afternoon free. After the journey, a walk around the manor’s 35,000 m² park is just the thing: round the lake, up to the lookout tower and over to the farmyard with its animals. The park is at its most colourful in autumn.

In the evening, dinner. If you have half board, it is served as a buffet, or to the table when the hotel is quieter. Please let us know about any special diet (gluten-free, lactose-free, vegetarian or vegan) in advance.

Day two, morning: the thermal baths

Breakfast is served from 8:00 to 9:00 and is included in the room rate. Afterwards is the ideal time for the baths, as there are usually fewest people in the water in the morning.

Thermal Corvinus is 700 metres from us. We take our guests there on our free transfer, so you do not need to worry about parking or a cold wind after you get out of the water.

In autumn you can enjoy:

  • seven indoor pools with different water temperatures,
  • the sauna and vitality world, which makes the most sense in cold weather,
  • massages and other treatments on the baths’ own premises.

Two to three hours in the water is enough. Warm water is more tiring than you might think.

Opening hours and admission prices change. Please check them before you travel on the official website of the baths. You can read more about the baths in our Thermal Corvinus guide.

Day two, afternoon: the Danube and its oxbow lakes

After lunch and a short rest, head for the water. There are two options, depending on how much walking you fancy.

The Číčov oxbow lake. A national nature reserve with a nature trail of twelve stops. It is one of the best places in the region for birdwatching and, in autumn, one of the most beautiful too. Access is restricted from 1 March to 15 July, so in autumn you can visit without any concerns.

A walk along the embankment. The flood embankment along the Danube has a firm, level surface and no cars. You do not need a destination; even half an hour is enough to clear your head.

If you enjoy cycling, there is bike hire at the manor house. We describe routes in the area in our article Rye Island by bike.

Day three: a short trip before you leave

Rooms should be vacated by 10:00. If you are not ready to go home yet, it is worth stopping at one of these places on the way.

Kolárovo water mill. A historic mill on the Little Danube with a milling museum. It is reached by a wooden bridge 86 metres long, which is described as the longest all-wooden bridge in Europe. A visit takes about half an hour. Please check the opening hours by phone.

Gabčíkovo waterworks. Viewing platforms overlooking the navigation locks. Admission and parking are free. Outside summer the information centre has shorter hours; as of September 2026 it is open from November to May, Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00 – 16:00.

You will find more ideas, sorted by the length of the trip, in our article Day trips from Veľký Meder.

When it rains

An autumn weekend without rain is a bonus, not the rule. That is why it is good to have a back-up plan.

  • The indoor part of the thermal baths and the saunas are ideal on a rainy day.
  • The gallery at the manor house, with paintings by contemporary artists, and the small museum are free for our guests.
  • The fitness room is open all year round, and we can arrange a massage on request.
  • Board games, chess, cards and table tennis for a longer evening.

What to pack

  • a warm layer and a windproof jacket, as it is breezy by the Danube,
  • sturdy shoes for the nature trail, which gets muddy after rain,
  • non-slip flip-flops for the baths,
  • a hat, if you are walking back from the baths,
  • binoculars, if you plan to visit the Číčov oxbow lake.
