The thermal baths are the reason people come to Velký Meder. Once you stay three days or more, though, you start wanting to see something else as well. We have sorted the places nearby by how much time each one takes.
Half a day
Gabčíkovo waterworks
The waterworks have viewing platforms overlooking the lock chambers and Rye Island (Žitný ostrov), the flat island between the Danube and the Little Danube. Access is free and there is no time limit.
Children love watching a ship rise or drop inside the lock. You can drive there, or cycle along the embankment. It is one of the few destinations where the journey is as interesting as the place itself.
A walk along the embankment
You do not need a destination. The embankment along the Danube is surfaced, flat and car-free, so it suits less confident walkers and pushchairs alike.
Číčov oxbow lake
A national nature reserve with a twelve-stop educational trail. One of the best birdwatching spots in the region.
Important: access to the reserve is restricted during the nesting season from 1 March to 15 July. In spring, do not plan a visit without checking the current conditions first. Autumn and winter are the best times.
A full day
Malkia Park
A big cat park in Orechová Potôň. Among full-day trips with children it is the most common recommendation in the area, and unlike a conventional zoo it focuses on large cats.
Please check admission, opening hours and seasonal restrictions on the park’s own website; outside the main season the opening hours are shorter, and in the winter weeks the park may close completely.
Kolárovo water mill
A historic water mill and milling museum on the Little Danube. It is reached by a wooden bridge described as the longest of its kind in Europe.
The guided tour takes about half an hour, so it combines well with a walk nearby. Admission prices differ between sources, so please confirm them directly with the operator.
Győr
A Hungarian town roughly 25 kilometres from us. A baroque centre, Xantus Zoo, the Rába-Quelle thermal baths. Just right for one day.

When you would rather not travel at all
Sometimes the best outing is the one that needs no car. Our 35,000 m² park has:
- a lake with fishing,
- horses and rides through the park, suitable for complete beginners,
- a farmstead with Rye Island animals,
- a lookout tower above the lake,
- sports pitches and a wooden barn,
- bicycle hire, in case you decide to set off after all.

Practical details for each destination
The figures come from the operators’ official websites, correct as of September 2026. Check them before you set off, because they change.
Gabčíkovo waterworks. The viewpoints are part of the information centre: a panoramic platform on the roof and a glazed viewing point above the exit from the lock. Entry and parking are free, and there is a café in the building. It is usually open from June to September daily 9:00–18:00, and from November to May Tuesday to Saturday 9:00–16:00; closed on public holidays. Guided tours can also be booked. The short circuit takes around 30 minutes and suits younger children and older visitors too; the long one runs 60 to 80 minutes.
Malkia Park. Admission as of September 2026: adult 15 €; child aged 3 to 18, 11 €; under-3s free; seniors and visitors with a disability 11 €; family ticket 2+1 for 37 € online. Opening hours change with the month: in September Tuesday to Friday 10:00–17:00, at weekends until 18:00, shorter later in the autumn. Note: admission is single entry through a turnstile, so once you leave the grounds you cannot go back in. In the winter weeks around Christmas it is usually closed.
Kolárovo water mill. The wooden bridge to the mill is 86 metres long and is described as the longest all-timber bridge in Europe. Admission and opening hours differ between sources and the operator’s official website was not available to us, so check by phone before you travel.
How much time to set aside
Rough timings, so that the day can be planned:

What to bear in mind when planning
Opening hours. Outside the main season places open for shorter hours and some close for the winter. Check on the day you travel, not a week ahead.
The weather. Most of the destinations nearby are outdoors. Save a rainy day for the indoor part of the baths or for a museum.
With children. One big destination a day is plenty. Two look sensible while planning and much less so around four in the afternoon.
Admission. Prices change and differ between sources. Check them on the operators’ own websites.
How to put the trips together
For a three-day stay, this pattern works well:
- day one the thermal baths, the reason you came in the first place,
- day two one full-day trip (Malkia Park or Győr),
- day three something short nearby and the rest of the time in the park.

How to get to each place
By car. The most flexible option; the roads on Rye Island are flat and easy to follow. Parking is straightforward at most destinations nearby, though not in Győr.
By bike. The destinations along the embankment can be reached by bike, and the ride is often half the pleasure. We lend bikes to our guests here at the hotel.
On foot. The embankment, the park and the town need no transport at all. The baths are 700 metres from us.
By train. Less useful for trips around the region, as services between smaller villages are sparse. For getting to us, though, the train is comfortable. We will collect you from the station free of charge.
When to go where
Mornings belong to the baths and to the places that fill up later in the day.
Midday is the worst part of a summer day for anything outdoors. That is the time for a museum, the indoor part of the baths, or lunch and a rest.
Early evening is the best time for the embankment, the park and for photographs, when the light is soft and there are fewer people about.
